What are superconductors?

Superconductors are materials that exhibit completely resistance-free electrical DC conductivity at a certain, very low temperature (transition temperature). This phenomenon can significantly improve the efficiency and performance of various technological applications by enabling lossless power transmission.

In addition to their electrical conductivity, superconductors show remarkable magnetic characteristics, making their fields of applications even more diverse, for example in contactless magnetic bearing and drive technology.

High temperature superconductors on the rise

High temperature superconductors (HTS) show a significantly higher transition temperature than conventional low temperature superconductors (LTS). As a result, the required working temperature can be reached using ordinary, comparatively inexpensive liquid nitrogen.

A superconductor is a material that conducts electrical DC current without resistance at a certain so-called critical temperature and magnetic field.

Superconductors conduct because their atoms change into a special order (Cooper pairs) at very low temperatures, which completely eliminates the electrical DC resistance. This allows an unimpeded flow of electrons through the material. The mechanism that leads to superconductivity is still unknown for HTS.

At very low temperatures, many elements and metallic compounds are superconducting. Our high temperature superconductors consist of ceramic compounds with, for example, yttrium, barium and copper.

The main advantage of superconductors is their ability to conduct DC current without energy loss. This leads to significant efficiency gains and energy savings in various applications, from power transmission and magnetic bearings to scientific and medical devices.
